Potentially stupid question re: Boss OC3

Been playing around with a second hand OC3... works fine as far as I can tell but the red light is permanently on. Is this normal or have I managed to FUBAR it already?

The red LED should only be on, when the pedal is physically switched on and plugged in.
Does the effect stop when you press the pedal?
