As long as you trigger it with a guitar that is ok
That opens it up to anything whatsoever then - you can trigger drum samples via a guitar to MIDI converter after all...

  • BOOM! definitely participating in this one (and actually entering this time) I feel a 3 hour jam session coming on!
Record the whole thing and enter it in full :)

I was on the verge of getting nit-picky about the definition of "using only guitar" but realised you're right. The whole point of all of these competitions is to inspire us to make music, so a broad interpretation of the "rules" is better.

Personally, if I can find the time to do this, then my personal aim will be to have all the sounds originating from the guitar - even to the extent of not using a bass guitar (I'll just use the Pitchfork instead). If people like it they can vote for it!

You are both correct - I was (as is not uncommon) being overly picky. Sorry. :)

Cool!  Tbh one of the things that's kept me from submitting stuff is knowing that in the past it was problematic if something went a bit tangential to the task which originally inspired it.
I love the restriction that a task imposes... seems to get creative ideas flowing... but then I don't like the restriction.
If "guitar soundscape" becomes "bongo opus" (and who's not done that eh?) then it's in! :)

  • In the past, people voting have just judged for themselves whether the entries fulfil the remit or not. No reason not to enter something just because you may have 'stretched the rules' a little - let the voting public decide.

That said, it's probably best to at least try and fit the remit. ;)

Though i always try and write sometrhing to fit with the given task, by the time i'm done with it, it usually dosen't .

i would recomend anybody just have a go see what happens.

Heads up - if you're looking to record a soundscape then a good delay can help. Computer Music have commissioned PSP to create a CM version of their acclaimed delay plugin. I have to say for a free plugin it's stunning - it's available in the latest edition of the mag which you can buy online or in the shops. On top of that you get a shedload of other free plugins and instruments.

    Watch the CM video ...

  • On the basis that we are only allowed to use guitar on this I've decided I'm going to use anything except a guitar to compose it then learn how to play it I think. I've still no idea how to make soundscapes without sounding awfully cheesy but we shall see

I remember a dude back in school who used to do 5 minute freestyle guitar solo playing, presumably improvised to an extent (though to be fair he could just have been regurgitating for all I knew), kind of what I would call noise playing with lots of fuzz and fast bits followed by some rhythmic chording. Would something like that count as a soundscape?

Would the Brian May type solo pieces count?

You're not alone. I've done one continuous take of improvisation, but I don't really know what I'm doing. I might have to go with what I've got.
    It's not a competition.

I have to confess I've not even thought about it yet.
    :-\"

For me, 'soundscape' implies a somewhat impressionistic approach - music is ordered sound, usually defined by rhythms, scales and harmonies, compositional structures, etc. Within a soundscape I think these can be 'softened', mutated and even ignored to a very large degree. At it's most abstract, I would say soundscaping becomes a sonic analogue to collage - indeed, I personally differentiate what I do sonically into two camps- 'music' and 'collage' - and my approach to using a guitar developed in a similar way (influenced very strongly by Syd Barrett and his unconventional approach).
