To be fair, I guess it's not always clear what the end result will be from the first drafts of the scripts, but that is a mad filum

Wasn't it a Ken Russell film? I'd imagine most actors would guess that they'd be getting into some weird shit with Ken at the helm.

I watched it again a few months ago.  I think it holds up surprisingly well.  The plot's nonsense, but I thought the same in 1988.  What struck me this time were the locations and the fact that it's actually one of Hugh Grant's better performances...  Peter Capaldi's quite good in it too.  Very odd that he cast minor royal Catherine Oxenberg and then got someone else to dub her voice in a terrible northern accent.

I can't think of any filmmaker quite like Ken Russell.  His films cover such a huge ranges of styles and genres (and budgets).  The only thing they have in common is that none of them are exactly subtle.

Ken had amazing vision and was able to turn that into equally amazing films. I seriously think he was either on drugs a lot of the time or was borderline insane. He could do subtle but not often. The Devils is my favourite of his.
