What's Hot
Want to have a decent bike storage solution for in the house. Thinking ceiling mounted - anyone have any experience with that?

In London I had something like this: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3333901.htm

Not that exact product but something like it.

I mounted a pair of hooks in the hallway in my old flat and used to hang my bike upside down as the ceiling was high enough not to bother anyone too much. It was either that or carry it through the house and store under cover on the balcony, but the balcony was tiny and it meant that there was no room to sit and enjoy the view. Worked fine. Now we moved and I built a small shed for two bikes...

Looks like it could be cool. Not 100% sure that I have the room for a wall mounted solution... hmmmm... will have a look.

The Hiplock Airlok looks very nice and is gold security rated, should be available pretty soon.

Ceiling/high-on-the-wall storage is very common in Berlin, where lots of flats have ceiling heights of 3m+ (in old buildings). Most of the solutions I saw were DIY jobs. Overengineer it sensibly and it'll be fine.

  • how high is the ceiling?
do any solutions take the bike up lying flat?
Also could be good to asko any forumites with advanced bondage skills ;-)

Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman.
My boss told me "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"... now I'm sat in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

Yup - I do. I live in an old flat with high ceilings and store my bike on a pulley in the hall that hoists the bike up by hooks that fit under the saddle and handlebars.

It's great if you are not using your bike everyday, would soon become a chore if you were. I've also attached a couple of eyelets to the wall at wheel height so that I can bungie the wheels to the wall otherwise the bike dangles above your head! I've been using the one I've got for about 10 years now and it works great. When I cycled daily though it didn't get much use.

^The pulley one is really cool!

As @ToneControl says, it reminds me of the *ahem* specialist catalogues my Chinese housemate ordered by the ream while I was at uni. The things I can never unsee!

Hmmm, I do use it most days as I cycle to work 3 or 4 days a week. I think something like Jim's solution would be best.

  • If the ceiling isn't high enough, how about a pair of hooks so you can turn the bike upside down and suspend it by its wheels? Then, have a pulley on the ceiling that pulls the saddle/handlebars also up to the ceiling so the bike is suspend flat against it.

Bit of faff, but could be pretty tidy.
