Exceptionally lucky, these things happen in aviation though. We try and mitigate risk but any series of events involving humans has a weak link!

Both of them were extremely lucky.

Sounds like some sort of failure to communicate that the runway wasn't clear. The pilot who hit him might not have been able to see him, the forward visibility in those is poor until the tail comes up.
