WTF - why book a train ticket?

The story is true. According to Virgin the train arrived late into Kings Cross so the staff didn't have time to put the reserved ticket notices on the seats. One of the guys was interviewed and said there had been an announcement on the train that all reserved seats were cancelled. He admitted the woman approached him, showed him tickets but he disputes the fact she said she was disabled.
It was on the tv this morning ( not that makes it true) and the two guys (there was a picture of them sat in the seats) have apparently started answering now, it said something similar to the above. Well, without the photo of them it is a non news story isn't it, just a bit of confusion on a train because Virgin's reservation system is crap.

It's an offence under the Railway Byelaws number 19 to occupy a seat where a reserved notice is exhibited and your not the reservation holder. As has been said, the staff at Kings Cross didn't have the time to put out the reservation notices so hence nothing could be done.

Seems like a bit of Mumsnet outrage - the picture in The Metro isn't cropped and obviously taken from the seat opposite - so she got a different seat ...

I love the wife+mum angle though. This isn't a story of two guys being twats... this is a story of a gynocentric phalophobic society which expects men to bow down to women at all times or else; rejection, ostracization, belittlement, feigned-disappointment... "you've not let me down... you've let your wife and mum down...."   .... all the classic mum tactics are there.

  • What needs to happen is all reserved seats should require fingerprint ID and electrocute the bastards who wrongly sit in the seats

Yeah, but to be honest. I would expect a man to stand up and offer his seat to a woman if she was being forced to stand. Even more so if there was a concern over the woman's health. I don't see why chivalry has to be seen as a bad thing. Women probably have it tough enough as it is.

In fairness of anyone comes up to me and shows me a reserved ticket for the seat I'm in, regardless of whether they're not honouring them, I'd get out the seat, depending on how they approached/asked.

OK, about a year ago I was travelling back to London from Bham. Some hooded youths got on with a ghetto blaster. I asked the 'train manager' to tell them to shut up. He had a very half hearted word...they didn't.

I was a bit pissed off and I told them to shut up, which they did and I told the ticket man he should have done more.

He came up to me after Coventry where they alighted.

He then showed me a scar in his stomach.

Seemingly in a similar incident he'd had a knife pulled on him and slashed by some idiots.

Frankly, I see his view- £22k p.a. to risk being stabbed?

So I assume they can't stop me going in first class either?  Cool
If the train is full, I think they have to let any paying passengers use first class.

Not true I'm afraid.  It is wholly at the discretion of the train crew.

    That is actual literal sexism.

Everone is assuming the guys aren't disabled in some way - exactly what they're being accused of.  Lame I know, but this all smacks of shaming.

I stand for older people (65+), pregnant women and visibly disabled people, I'd never stand up for a younger woman, it's patronising if nothing else.

See that's tough for me as I'm proper hard so would have to stand for everyone.

I'd definitely stand for a woman who I thought was a feminazi, just for shiz and giggs.

I try to be nice to people but sometimes they make it very difficult. Once as I was getting off a train a woman in a posh frock tried to push in front of me, and when I continued on my way remarked "A gentleman would let a lady off first", to which I replied "Sadly, neither of us is either".

Well, that was my reply in my head a few minutes later, but I couldn't find her at that point. Shame. It was jolly clever.

    That's my point.

I'm not an arse, I give seats up for people older than me (happens less often these days !) or a preggers lady

Yes, life would be much simpler if the guard could use violence, and physically manhandle one of the guys out the seat, stick his head out of the window and decapitate him on a passing train. I bet the other guy would move then!!!! But seriously, I know what they're getting at but I can see the point that the guard can't physically force someone out of a seat - they're obviously in the line of fire for an assault charge if they overstep the mark. Pragmatically, if the situation was clear enough you'd hope that other passengers would intervene on a packed train and "persuade" the guy to do the right thing?
