Sorrento

What's Hot
Will be going in a couple of weeks time, just for a weeks break. Other than Capri and Pompeii, any suggestions of nearby sights/trips that could be fitted in?

Herculaneum is worth a look, it's actually better preserved than Pompeii but a lot of it is buried under modern housing.

Positano is a beautiful town. Bride of Boogie and I had our honeymoon there a couple of years back.

If you go to Capri, don't go at the weekend, it's bloody heaving with people coming over from Naples and the queues for the bus and/or funicular up to the top are horrendous. Definitely worth it though for the fabulous views.

Ravello is well worth a visit, beautiful little town set up high above the coast, with stunning views ... go to Villa Cimbrone for the best views of the Amalfi coastline.

  • When you go to Herculaneum, it's well worth the 8 or 10 Euros for a guided tour.  The guides just wait around near the ticket kiosks.  We had a history professor from Rome who knew everything!   I preferred looking at Capri from a boat - we hired one in Sorrento harbour.  It's pretty commercialised when you get there.  Agree with Ravello and Positano although the latter can be stupidly busy.  If you're in Sorrento, then the Red Lion (Leono Rosso?) is a lovely place to eat without breaking the bank.  Finally, if you fly Club Class with BA, make sure they send your luggage - DAMHIK.

I did it in the spring, my top tips are:

    1. Everything is done via 'tourist trips', don't let this put you off. The best way to get max stuff done - some you can piece together yourself though. The one to go for is Capri Luxury speedboat, you get to swan about on a decent powerboat with a guide and swimming and all that jazz.. We booked a good one operating out of Massa Lubrense but they pick you up and drop off, which is worth it alone.

    2. Ischia for the thermal spa water.  http://www.ischiareview.com/ischia-thermal-spas.html    This is where Steve Hillage goes on his holidays! [Avoid 'Tropical', I'd go for Negombo if i ever go back, which is highly likely].

    3. Get a day bus ticket from the station in Sorrento and go traveling around the coast. Take the bus to Amalfi and hop on the local bus up to Ravello. The gardens in Ravello are great but the real fun is the bus journey, mad Italian bus drivers shouting at everything, singing Opera, waving at pretty girls, you get the idea..but get in the Q early especially for the return trip (and don't be annoyed when the front of the Q becomes the back when the bus driver stops in the wrong place).

    4. Geletaria Primavera on the main street. Some sort of celebrity Italian cake maker to the stars.

    5. you will have fun the moment you walk out of the airport. The Taxi drivers are hilarious and will blatantly lie about cancelled ferries and how expensive the bus is etc...we took a taxi in the end just because they were so funny, translating everything with ipads bolted to the dashboard. We had a scream. You will get ripped off, don't worry about it, see it as part of the experience.

  • ischia and procida were the best things we did in that neck of the woods. Sorrento cool but touristy, Capri a bit poncey...procida in particular was lovely
