RIP Arnie...one of the great sporting legends.

Met him a couple of times at his home town country club in Latrobe some 15 years ago. A true gent & very unassuming not up his own ass like most of the top sportsmen. Had the embarrassment of teeing off in front of him and his dog. Now that was intimidating especially as I'm a hacker at golf. He had the good manners not to laugh but I swear that fucking dog let out a snigger LOL

Have a pic of his trophy cabinet somewhere....now that was a pretty packed display !

His loss is a sad day for the sporting world...end of the golden era of golf I guess

  • A wonderful chap, fine golfer, and Augusta's opening drives will never be the same now he has gone. The catalyst for the commercialization of sport in partnership with IMG. Nobody would doubt that sportspeople back in the day deserved better remuneration: the balance has tipped too far in my view.

  • The Big Three did much to popularise golf as a spectator sport. My Dad is a fan of Arnold but his big hero is Jack. All three of them legends.

It'll be a long time before a European star has the same status.. except maybe Seve of course.

    RIP Arnold.

If people are willing to pay a premium to watch sports, then the cash should be going to those competing, I agree, it's probably got a bit ridiculous now, but that's capitalism.

It is indeed capitalism. And if capitalism is what takes us from Arnold Palmer to a $10 million quid golf tournament and now huge questions taken about bungs in football, with one agent talking about the the new Premier League cash floating around is going to make things crazy, then maybe we do need limits.
