Laptop Help

Hi,
The laptop in question powers on and I can hear it booting but the screen stays completely black.
Is there anything an idiot like myself can do to fix this?

First thing is to plug in an external monitor and see if the laptop is working and if it's just a screen issue. Sometimes you need to press FN and one of the number keys to output the signal to an external source but it will have a wee icon on the number key to show that.
Start there - plenty other things but rule out the actual machine being kaput before doing anything else

There is a button to turn off the screen, fn + f6 on my laptop. Make sure you didn't accidentally press that.
