Halloween gigs

Ok, we're booked for halloween and I'm a grumpy twat when it comes to dressing up. Any costume suggestions that take minimal effort, look reasonable and still allow you to play freely?

Also...songs? Maybe...
Ghostbusters
Spirit in the Sky

Any more?

An undergraduate university gown is easy to play in. Silly hat and green face paint optional.

Monster Mash is easy. It just relies on the singer putting on a silly voice.

We get booked every Halloween and we think it's the audience's job to dress up, the band just dress like a band.

They would probably appreciate it if you dressed up too.

I've done ones with a bandana with skulls on and a rubber bat hanging from my guitars headstock. The singer had a bit of face paint, just an little effort is all that's required.

Last Halloween we played one as Skalloween. Only really makes sense if you're in a ska band though. Shared the bill with a children's magician.

I'm doing a couple of Halloween gigs.  We all have matching Ghostbusters t-shirts, so that's the costume done.  I might break out a skeleton onesie if I'm feeling like stepping things up.  My 6-year old wanted to be the Grim Reaper this year, so I can probably borrow his scythe if I ask nicely!  :)

Song wise, we have a three tune medley of:
    - Monster Mash
    - Ghostbusters
    - Ghost Town

Plus I'm going to do Fire by Arthur Brown (he of the crazy world), and Timewarp is already our usual 2nd set closer, so that's in the bag.

Thriller is best left to the DJ I reckon - too much work by half to do that one justice in a guitar band...
Some of the gear, some idea

I have a white lab coat with lots of faked up blood and gore, a stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, and a clip-board (obviously I put that down when I start playing...) and become Herr Doktor von Rockenrohl, controversial pioneer of desktop neurosurgery and author of the definitive text on field expedient lobotomy. I really must get one of those head worn reflector thingies that doctors on old American films always seem to have...
Don't ask me, I just play the damned thing...

  • Spooky, I mean the song Spooky - by Classics IV, simple but effective and open to being given a rock upgrade.  I made the mistake one year of being a rasta, the heavy dreadlock wig was like having earplugs in, muffled the sound badly.  Don't be a rasta.  All the other suggestions are great here, played most of them.
