Windows 10 license transfer

I've got Windows 10 on a laptop. It's a shit laptop. 

That's unfair, it's alright, but it could do with an ssd to make it more lively. I suppose I may try that.

Anyway, it's not very good. But I own a Windows 10 licence. Great. 

Can I take it off said laptop and pop it onto a new machine? It would save me about £100. 

It was a free upgrade licence, mind... 

Also, how easy is it to replace the hard drive in a laptop? Just unscrew, pop out, pop in, wahey?

But surely you need a windows licence to get the windows 10? It doesn't sound very nice. I don't fancy having my key locked out because of that... 

It's like buying a licence from kinguin or something. Seem dodgy as balls.

Did you buy a Windows 10 license or was it installed on the laptop when you purchased it?

I could Google it but I suspect its a "No", as in the licences aren't transferrable.

Depends on the Licence you bought, if it is OEM then it is limited to that motherboard.

I need to check this out as well I'm about to upgrade my main PC from amd to a core i5 which will obviously require changing the motherboard and ram.  

I bought windows 8 pro for this machine originally then got the free upgrade to 10 but I'm pretty sure when I change the motherboard windows will see it as an entirely new PC.  So will I have to now buy windows 10?

I'm fairly sure it'll just work if you try it.

I had an OEM version of Win 10, bought new hardware and it activated first time.

I'm pretty sure you can ring Microsoft up and transfer it? As long as it's retail anyway.

It worked for me, you have to go into the bios to get the key though, it's hidden in there somewhere. Used my old laptops key for my PC, worked fine.

Google how to get your wife does key from your bios and you should find it.

Not sure if this will work for everyone but it did for me

You can deregister the license from one machine and then re-register on another if it is an OEM license.

Thanks! I misssed the deadline by a day for updating my wifes laptop OS - i managed to fix that last night using that link, so I'm back in her good books!
