I paid too much tax!

So that nice Mr Hammond is going to give me some back.

I have to go online and open my "Personal Tax Account", and then I can arrange for it to be paid direct into my bank account.  In only 3 to 5 days.

Did they write to you, as in proper HMRC headed paper though the post?

If not, it's likely spam. Ring them independently to check first.

Yep, that's what happened last year, but now it's changed (at least for personal tax - I don't know about business tax), so now I have my  very own Personal Tax Account.

Good thinking, but yes, it was a proper P800 form through the post, detailing all the calcs as to how I'd paid too much.  

I had to go through the Government Gateway website, which I'd already set up when I claimed my state pension, so I'm pretty sure it's on the level.

Yeah right, I had the same scenario & it took the best part of 18 months & the loss of my paperwork TWICE to get the money back Grrr.
I hope I never ever have to deal with them again.

The new system works really well. I had my refund letter a few weeks back, sorted out a gateway account and two days later the money was in my account. You still have the option of waiting for a cheque, but that takes 40 odd days to come through.

I had a text last week saying I was owed some tax. I followed the link in the text to a website that asked for my name, address, bank details (inc the last 3 digits on the back of my card), NI number, etc.

Naturally I filled it all in, should hear back any day now.

They have sent me a cheque through, would rather do it online bah!

I had similar a few weeks back.  I went on the website etc and the money was paid by BACS in a couple of days.  Easy!

I have over paid tax last year, but they still haven't written to me... and the "how much tax did I pay last year" on the gov website says they've not calculated it yet ... then no option to claim anything back... and because the P800 hasn't come through... can't do anything

Hi @Myranda - I guess they work their way through them in some sequence, whether NI Number, Tax Reference, or just surname.  

Last year, mine didn't come until later in October.

Everything comes to one who waits!
