It's their hair. Men aren't immune to body image changes and losing hair or going grey causes unhappiness in some, and some people just want to change how they look.

I'm 45 and sporting the "salt and pepper"  pre silver fox look. 
always had a (fucking) ginger beard which has thankfully gone mostly silver. 
I'm also proud of my thinning patch at the crown,  beat my dad though, he was fully bald at 20!

I don't think men dyeing their hair should be laughable, after all most women dye theirs so there's a bit of a double standard at work here (mind you, women tend not to be dumb enough to go for black or dark brown in late middle age).  

But it's unusual and therefore almost always noticeable, so - I agree - it does seem a bit ridiculous.  McCartney, for example, looks an absolute twat.

Not an issue for me, I'm 52 and no grey yet, except in my beard.  My dad's 82 and still has very little grey (and no hair loss either).

I'd rather be grey than balding. I feel kind of similar about balding guys who try and cover it though, or get hair transplants. Or even worse, "micropigmentation" aka tattooed head stubble. I saw somebody who'd obviously had that done. Hair has texture, even when shaved. Light catches it differently to skin. All baldness treatments seem so desperate.

I'm grey and balding, nowt you can do about it, hair dye is as convincing as a a toupee, now then if someone with Macca's or Travoltas millions
 can't do either without looking like a cunt, what hope do I have? Silver fox it is then.
