You can get Emagic AMT8's pretty cheap on eBay.

USB... seems to open a different can of worms - powered hubs, how other controllers are routed, etc. I lack the smarts for working that all out.

But an old-fashioned 8x8, with some degree of patching available, seems so simple. Like this thingy: http://www.polynominal.com/roland-a-880/ - needs no computer so there's no problem of (lack of) driver support.

Hmmm - saw one on ebay and that seller said no more Windows drivers, so no way to programme the routing, I think? Even the Steinberg Midex 8 has no official driver support anymore.

I've been using iConnectivity USB to MIDI cables for my MFB Tanzmaus and Oberheim Matrix, then bog-standard USBs for my Prophet and Sub 37.
