No idea whether this is exclusive to Guitar Center or whether they're going to be making their way over here.

One day I'll get the hang of hyperlinking, but it is not this day. Fixed now

Almost anything would be better than a DS-1.
    An absolutely hateful sound.
    IMO, of course.

To be fair, they do sound pretty bad.  The DS-1X isn't bad, but it still has a bit of metallic fizz.

You'd hear guys like Satriani using a DS-1 as their main gain, in the early days, and he sounded great, so I dunno.

Do you know the Steve Vai song Oooo?  The solo of that is a DS-1 straight into the mixing board IIRC.

  • DS1 seems to be super picky about pickups, and input level. Too hot of a signal in seems to give a fairly unpleasant drive sound. Also the tone control has a weird range to it (often needs lower values).

The DS2 is more usable IMO, but it isn't as good at being a DS1 as the DS1 is, if that makes any sense to anyone.

I only ever tried a DS-1 once. It was through a Watkins wedge front Dominator so maybe not the ideal amp for it but it was enough to put me off them forever.
I was fairly new to distortion pedals at the time but I had an MXR Dist+ that I much preferred.

I want that. It might make me miss my MIJ DS-1 less...

Here's a great tip for using a ds-1, to get the most out of it.  Take your lead from your guitar towards the ds-1, but rather than plugging it into the input (and here's the good bit), don't.  Either plug it into a different pedal, or just plug it into the amp.

  • If you're gonna buy a black DS-1, why not just buy a Metal Zone and have an infinitely better time? :/

Good on Boss for up-selling a £43 pedal by painting it a different colour, and setting the price at £53. A fool and their cash, etc.

The Metal Zone is actually grey. The one you want is an HM-2 :).
