You'd hear guys like Satriani using a DS-1 as their main gain, in the early days, and he sounded great, so I dunno.
Do you know the Steve Vai song Oooo? The solo of that is a DS-1 straight into the mixing board IIRC.
The DS2 is more usable IMO, but it isn't as good at being a DS1 as the DS1 is, if that makes any sense to anyone.
I was fairly new to distortion pedals at the time but I had an MXR Dist+ that I much preferred.

Here's a great tip for using a ds-1, to get the most out of it. Take your lead from your guitar towards the ds-1, but rather than plugging it into the input (and here's the good bit), don't. Either plug it into a different pedal, or just plug it into the amp.
