Silverface alternatives/clones

So i keep hearing/getting told that the '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb is noisy as sin and I should stear clear. I loved the warmer sound of it in the shop in comparison to blackface amps. The DRRI has always been a touch too bright for me.

So, is the '68 really that bad? What are solid alternatives?

I tried a '68 Deluxe last Sunday and was mightily impressed by it. Lovely sounding combo, quite tempted to pick one up myself.

I didn't really notice the noise some people are talking about (although I was more concerned with the guitar I was trying) but, it's worth bearing in mind, that if the folks complaining about the high noise floor are predominantly home or studio players, any amp can be noisy in that environment. You can get away with so much more in a gig situation.

My thoughts exactly. A Princeton '68 has been suggested so will see if I can try one of those

I seem to remember (but could be wrong) that the earliest versions were noisy owing to the reduced negative feedback - but this was subsequently tweaked to make them quieter.

I tried one about a year ago and thought it sounded really good - it didn't strike me as noisy at all. I prefer the 65 Blackface RI - but that's purely a tonal preference on my part.
