    Could just be the angle, but it looks like the lock is just around the seatpost rather than through the rear triangle, so if you wanted to you could steal the lock and leave the bike. That would really confuse them.

    Ah - that's it… psychology. The bicycle can feel the lock on it, so it doesn't try to run off even though it could very easily pull it off the post.
