Unless it's getting really hot when it's on it'll be a software issue not a hardware one.

If you aren't confident I wouldn't take it apart to clean it, you're likely to do more harm than good.

Hmm, it gets warm rather than hot - not uncomfortable. 

I'll try an ssd and clean install. And a blast of air around the fans just because.

Should be a reasonable processor but being laptop processor is clocked a little low compared to a desktop processor or more modern laptop processor.
