Books that *should* be films!

What's Hot
I simply cannot understand why Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest books (Harlequin, Vagabond and Heretic) haven't been adapted for the screen. They are all absolute rip-roarers!

...or all eight volumes of The Outlaw Chronicles, by Angus Donald. Admittedly, you'd probably have to do some judicious pruning and get them down to a trilogy, but still...

The Flashman series of books could do with a decent screen outing too. The one film that was made was absolutely awful. :(
Not much of the gear, even less idea.

Pretty much anything by Iain Banks.  They serialised the Crow Road for telly and it was great.  Reading through Whit for the first time in years - had forgotten how good a book it is, would make a great series.

His stories generally have godalmighty twists in them that you never see coming and never seem contrived either.  I think they'd translate to the screen very well.

Not a film, but I'd love to see the Logan McRae novels by Stuart Macbride turned into a tv show. There's been talk of it for years but nothing's materialized yet.

    It's a tough question.

Usually if I really enjoy a book and then see the film later even if I enjoy the film I still miss the bits missed for time reasons etc.

There was a Puzo book that I thought was far better than the Godfather but I'll be damned if I can remember the name at the mo.

    Gateway by Frederik Pohl.
At *least* as good as Ender's game, someone owns the film rights to it I believe. Hopefully theyre being sat on until the film can do the book justice

I always thought that Julian May's 'Many-Coloured Land' and its sequels would make for a great mini-series. Great sci-fi with lots of characters and fun plots. I think I read somewhere that someone is looking into it already, though that could mean a few years before we see anything.

There's loads of them, is there not?

The Monty Python one was especially good.

I do know what you mean by books that should be films, but I reckon some books are TOO good to be films. Take Lovecraft for instance. Take At The Mountains of Madness: turn it into a film. What will you get? Disappointment. That story is so flawlessly perfect -as it were- to turn it into a film. It really does make your imagination run wild. You can even smell certain things. Some books shouldn't become films.
