How far from a wall does an open back amp need to be?

I find quite often in gigging situations that I am forced to put my amp (68 Custom Deluxe Reverb or 68 Custom Vibrolux) very close to a wall, in some cases right against it. I am convinced they don't sound as good when this happens, but how far out is far enough?

Like, 1 foot I think? Pretty sure I read that somewhere. Try turning down the bass when backed up to a wall, it might help a little bit.
