    Is there a difference between a regular R9 from that year and this R9 that has a serial which begins with R.
    Are they the same spec , is this a japan spec guitar? Every time I think I have a handle on Gibson model types. Learn something else. Thanks in advance

    In 2016 Gibson introduced the 'Standard Historic' series, which is identical to the regular Historic series from 2013 and 2014, other than the guitars having an R prefix in the serial number. The serial numbers without the R are now reserved for the 'True Historic' (snigger) series.
