How does this sound?

What's Hot
Hi Guys

Newbie so please be kind (yet ruthless!)

How does this sound to you? Ignore the playing, I know that's bad(!) but I'm trying out recording direct from my amp via USB to GarageBand.

I've pretty much never used GB before I recorded this last night...so to me it sounded ok straight off the bat but to a trained ear it probably sounds awful

If anyone has any pointers for direct recording in this manner I'd be grateful! I feel like I could play around for months in GB and never really know what I was doing!

Cheers!
Martin

It sounds like a recording of a guitar :) I don't think there's much to critique really, playing seems fair enough! Only thing I noticed is that the reverb was maybe a bit obvious and splashy - try something a little smoother, darker and shorter.

BUT - until a sound has context, it's not good or bad, it just is.

    Keep at it.

Haha yeah sorry it wasn't a very long recording either! I'm just very new to all this and was curious as to how it sounded to those with more finely tuned ears!

Good starting point on the reverb, thanks :)

Agree with the reverb thing...but then in a full mix you would lose most of it.

Have you the facility to add some compression and EQ ?

I expect so! I haven't even scratched the surface in GB, this was literally load it up and hit record and see what comes out!

  • Ideally you would want a little more compression before the amp and a touch less reverb, but you won't know if it sounds good in a mix.

Sounds good, you might want to try roll the tone on your guitar down and turn the treble on the amp up to compensate, it will make the high end sound a little fatter, more inline with the Dumble style of amp that JM plays.... though it might just be that you have used a bright reverb.
