Ibanez Tubescreamer Mini

I have owned quite a few Tube Screamer based overdrives in the past but never an actual Tube Screamer. I want to try and start holding on to some pedals that come off rotation on my board rather than selling them on and at some point down the road regretting it.

I have a space for another mini pedal on my board and think I might try the Tube Screamer Mini, it's only £65.

Is it any good, does it cover the Tube Screamer sound adequately?

It's better than adequate, it's excellent I reckon.

  • I've seen it used in a couple of videos on YouTube and everyone says it's just a tiny TS9 - can't see a drawback with it really. It might be a bit difficult to tweak in the dark, onstage but if you're after that sound, it nails it.

I quite fancy a 9volt surfing bear which is a fatter sounding TS808, I believe our @Col_Decker is an advocate, for £59.

I haven't tried one, but my suggestion would be the Keeley mini red dirt.

It's a keeley mod ts9 with 6 clipping options on internal dip switches.

I've got one and it's great.

Not too crazy a price for a Keeley either at about £100

You're asking if a Tube Screamer covers the Tube Screamer sound adequately.

No, smart arse, I'm asking if a Tube Screamer Mini sounds like a Tube Screamer

Pedals like the Memory Boy and Little Big Muff don't sound like their bigger versions, so it's a good question to be fair.

Like a Tube Screamer only smaller.

Well, clearly, he is concerned that it may not sound the same, that the smaller size may necessitate some compromise in components that adversely affects the sound. I would have thought that was both obvious and understandable from his post.

Sounds exactly the same to me (or as near as makes no difference)

Whereas a memory boy will be very different to it's bigger brother. A Muff, is not 'a' muff there are many of the things and where it is  very likely a muff, it may not necessarily sound like another muff.

A Tubescreamer however, is a Tubescreamer. It can easily fit in a 1590A even using through hole components (though it's unlikely it is). There are only a couple of parts different between a TS9 and an 808 also, and they sound very similar.

It stood head and shoulders in this ep of That Pedal Show - better than the Keeley Modded to my ears:

  • I have one, and I love it. It was my first TS after using the Green side of a TC Nova Drive and its the best TS i've heard. Currently using it to juice a JHS Morning Glory and it sounds amazeballs.

You're welcome mate. Use mine all the time, either into drive pedals or gained up amp, sounds great either way.
