Volume question.....

So I reduce the volume knob on a overdriven and sustaining guitar and it reduces volume and gain and some characteristics of the tone.....would a volume pedal in the chain reduce the volume but leave gain and OD nuances intact.....the exact same sound only lower in volume? is that doable folks?

is your gain from (1) a pedal into a clean amp or from (2) the preamp itself? 

If 1, a volume pedal AFTER the gain pedal will only change the decibels not the gain

If 2, a volume pedal in the fx loop is the only way to alter the volume without changing gain characteristics. 

If you dont have an FX loop and youre getting at the gain from the amp then youre in a right pickle.
