Phil McGough. No, not a famous name but one of the army of semi-pro musicians who keep music live. A band mate of mine in the early days. A good singer/guitarist with a great sense of humour. Nice bloke. Sad to lose him.

Your updated list makes it feel like George Michael and Jay Kay are actually dead.

Yep, George (and Jay Kay?) was one on the many 'dead celebrity' hoaxes this year. From opera singers to hollywood actors to pop stars and beyond. Strange what amuses some people.

I was going to add John Bradbury but he died the same day as Lemmy and that was 28/12/15.
Perhaps it's premature to do lists of the year until the year has actually finished.

    Technically, Lemmy was last year

Yup.  I played Ace Of Spades and Gangsters as a tribute when I DJ'd on NYE.  People actually danced!!!

@rocker it would be good if you removed George Michael and Jay Kay from your list please mate. Both were sick hoax deaths. Ta.

  • Joe Skyward, bass player with The Posies, died in March this year. An incredible player and a huge inspiration for me.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.

Has anyone mentioned Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane yet?
He went a week or so after Bowie so may have passed under the radar a bit. As well as The Airplane he did a brilliant 'solo' album 'Blows Against The Empire', which although full of hippy flag-waving has some fantastic music on it.

This might have been missed since it's not anyone we will have heard of and it might be overlooked as being 'Russian military', but in sheer scale this is an awful loss of musicians - 64 members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, plus 28 others.
