I'm going down an amp build and looking for a suitable speaker for the 1x12 combo. What do you guys think is a good choice for the 25+ wattage?

I am drawn to :-

Celestian Gold
Celestian CreamBack

Taydon True Brit
Taydon Alnico Ace 50 (phew that's an expensive one.)

I usually like a bright sounding amp. So any experienced pointers do you have? I'm looking to buy if you have any for sale ?

What kind of amp are you going for, eg tweed, blackface, Marshall, and do you want it to stay clean, break up early or whatever?

  • It's mixture of all really but I would say more Marshall like. Not wanting it to break up too early as I want some clean headroom

Out of your list, and if more marshall like amp, then the creamback would be my choice

  • Scrub that I'd say it's a Dumble style preamp into a tweed style output stage. So yeah a mixture really :)

I'd go for one not listed- Celes Blue. The new Fane also worth considering. (A70 I think)

I would normally gravitate to the blue James but I need a higher speaker wattage than the Blue can dish up

WGS speakers have a good reputation and might be worth a look.  I've used one of the 10" speakers.

There are quite a lot of models.  Lean Business have 4 pages of them to look through.

This one looks to be their high powered version of a Blue:

Out of your list @hotpickups, this would also be my choice. However, can you actually get them anymore? Lean have been out of stock for ages now and I've not seen them available anywhere else.

Along with @cruchman, I'd also like to chuck the WGS Blackhawk into the mix along with the Eminence Red Fang and Fane A60.

Yeah I've noticed that :( I think it's going to have to be the Celestain Gold at this rate. Still pricey but is it worth it?

Gold doesn't sound the same as a Blue - I've had both.  I'd be more tempted to try the WGS or Fane.

  • Doesn't have to sound the same as I think it'll be interesting to have a different flavour from the blue I'll be running along side it in another amp. I don't want it ice pick brittle sound though

    same answer then

If you look at Dumble style amps they like G12-65 type speakers (or EV) so a Creamback 65 would get you a nice thick sound

I picked one up on eBay for £60 a while back. They do turn up...

I think I'll be going for the Creamback @monkey42  so thanks for the heads up. I'll look for a used broken in one for a while but realise I'll  probably have to buy new albeit a pricey option
