I'm off to Venice - Any recommendations?

Now then,

I'm off to Venice with me partner in February for my 30th birthday. Whilst we're there the carnival thing starts so that should be pretty cool. Are there any tips or recommendations on how we should spend the rest of our time though?

Any recommended places to eat? Any good drinking related things to do like Prosecco/Wine tours? Any good music things to do? I've already spied a jazz club which looks pretty cool!

We're there for 7 nights so excursions out of Venice also welcome!

Wonderful city. But can be VERY pricey. Fro example go for a coffee in St Mark's square and expect to pay 50 Euro for the privilege.

.The palace is well worth a visit as is the market next to the Rialto.

I found that on foot it's a great place to explore and just wandering around at your own pace lets you discover your own hidden gems within the city.

Gondalas are very expensive but as a one off treat worth it.

My best tip would be to get on a Traghetto - a slightly bigger gondola that acts as a ferry across the grand canal. Costs a fraction of the Gondola price and cant be hilarious fun especially if you have to stand.

We went a few years ago. Absolutely brilliant place when it's not too busy and/or flooded.

I was going to recommend Ca Vignotto out in the lagoon but it looks like it's gone

Half the fun of Venice is just wandering around and happening upon stuff. Pick up a street map so you've got a rough idea where you are, but it's a very compact city and it's fairly hard to get lost. It is a VERY expensive place though. Try to eat well away from the main tourist streets. 

I mentioned it in the other thread that's been linked, but it's well worth going out to the other islands on the water bus. Murano, Burano and Torchello are all lovely. It's a hop on hop off service and you can do all three comfortably in a day.

You can cover most of Venice in 3-4 days or so. Live musuc usually at St Marks at night. Free if you stand and watch past the tables.
Do go up to the bell tower, great views.
Peggy Guggenheim collection worth seeing.

Then get off to the smaller islands for friendlier folk:
Lido is nice and laid back, take your swimming trunks and have dinner after.
Murano glass blowing demonstrations & shops.

Would recommend buying fresh bread / cheese etc from the markets and making daily pack ups. This restaurant is pretty nice too

As above. Coffee in a main piazza and you need a second mortgage. Wander a street or two behind and you're back in the real world.

And this bar was brilliant when we went. Not busy and really cheap (in 2009 at least!). They had the best of the Eurythmics playing when we were there. I think of it every single time I hear one of their songs. Can't find it on TripAdvisor so it might be gone but it's called Bacaro Lounge and only 2 mins from St Marco
