Dweezil Zappa being told not to use last name!

This came through from pledge music today.
Seems like the other Zappa children are trying to stop Dweezil using his surname of Zappa on stage  !
Yikes! Bet that was a good fun Christmas in the Zappa house.

It's been going on for quite a while now. Ahmet and Diva got control of the Zappa Family Trust when Gail died. There have been legal shenanigans going on since then, and for a while before. All seemingly about the money.

It's Ahmet and Diva. Moon has publicly supported Dweezil throughout.

I "may" have been following this story over the last 20+ years since Frank's death

Gail repossessing guitars that were given to Dweezil in Frank's will was a real stinker. And the ZFT being so poor they "had" to sell the family home (to Lady Gaga for $5m!) and still couldn't balance the books! Valley Girl and Don't Eat the Yellow Snow re-releases would have sorted that out.

Seems that not all of the family had inherited Frank's business acumen.

It's sad really, the idea of keeping the Zappa legacy alive could have been the beautiful thing that Zappa Plays Zappa was intended to be and Frank would have appreciated (and was at all of the gigs I've seen).

Ive enjoyed a couple of his albums, but Frank was a but of a cock himself from what ive read.

Being a fan of Beefheart im probably a bit biased though!

He was actually registered as Ian because the registrar refused to allow them to use Dweezil. It was changed legally when he was 7 when he found out and asked to have his name legally changed to Dweezil. Dweezil was originally the pet name FZ had for Gail's little toe.

Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa was his birth name.
Apparently the registrar had less of a problem with that than "Dweezil Zappa".
Dweezil burst into tears when he found out.

I haven't watched this for ages but I remember thinking how likeable Dweezil was ( bit less so his wife) and they seemed to have a pretty modest lifestyle for someone from a rock star family ( ' eco' lifestyle so arguably by choice even if he is loaded). Whereas in everything I've read or watched abut Frank I never found him at all warm or likeable. Amazing guy but probably enjoyed more from a distance.

As ever with things like this, probably somewhere in between, sadly.

This is why, if I was ever told in an interview that "We're just like a family here" I always ran a mile in the direction of away. Yup, you argue constantly, stab each other in the back and can't wait to see each other fuck off.
