Open Source plugin MFX Stomp Box host from MOD at NAMM 2017

The idea has been talked about on here, so I thought I would post this and see what your reaction is.

"Berlin's MOD Devices has taken a new approach to multi-effects processors with the Duo, an open-source pedal that invites users to make their own combinations of effects, synths, amp sims, tools and more."

The downside appears to be that it uses a proprietary plugin format rather than taking advantage of the wide range of VST plugins out there already, well that and the $649 price tag.

The proprietary but open source approach vs standard VST plugins would make an interesting subject for discussion too (maybe?)

  • Expensive. I'd put my money on it going the same way as this.

I assume that the PedalPro is analogous to a well known large flightless bird @Heartfeltdawn ?

I can see that DNA in it's basic conception and pricing too.

I would be interested in your thoughts on the point raised about proprietary open source vs industry standard VST plugins.  Are VSTs open source or proprietary and licence based do you know ?

  • 600 bucks to have a pedal to run open source plugins, none of which have sounded particularly good going by the stuff I've heard on the company plugins page, with editing screens when not connected to a computer that are worse than a Zoom G3, and I have a total of two footswitches..

    VSTs use Steinberg's SDK.

    Open source won't.

I remember seeing it months ago, thinking this miight be good for £200 ,like a bigger Hotone Xtomp, and then seeing the actual price. It probably does more stuff than the Xtomp but a dual effects pedal for $649 is too rich for my blood.

If it used VST/AAX I'd be all over this. Goodhertz Trem Control is the best tremolo emulation I have ever heard; I'd be all over it. That and Vulf! Love the Goodhertz
