Italy's Invisible Cities

Just watched this on Beeb 1 - Alexander Armstrong and Michael Scott exploring cities in Italy (they've done Venice and Naples in previous weeks, Florence tonight).

Well worth a watch if you're at all interested in Italian history and/or art - they use scanning equipment to construct a VR model of the city in question, whilst exploring the bits that most of us don't get to see.

If you missed them I'm sure they'll be on iPlayer.

No - you haven't.  Not if they're invisible.

I happened on these on Iplayer, stuck the first one on not expecting much and really enjoyed it! Venice was cool too. I knew in principle that the city was built on wooden stakes, spent a few days there when I was 18. But actually seeing them walking in the marsh and the CGI that showed how it was done was really cool.

He's probably been told to act all excited by the producer. I don't mind it tbh, I actually find Mr Smugface Michael Scott far more irritating.

Agreed, although I have to admit that he knows his stuff.

I wonder if they'll do more?  What other cities would folks like to see?

They made comment in the first episode about having done scans in Rome, so I guess that second series is on the cards.  I'm hanging fire on the Firenze episode for now, gotta have something to look forward to ;)

Funny, a guy at work warned me off going there when I was talking about taking my wife on a city break. Since I couldn't afford to take her on a city break, I decided to believe him.

Some Aussie friends of ours went to Naples and the wife was mugged in the street had a gold necklace stolen, all within a couple of of hours of them landing. Not a nice place for tourists by the sound of it. The Amalfi coast is lovely though, we had our honeymoon in Positano.
