Have you considered gripping the 7d?I have never looked back since using one. More battery life, easier to hold with big lenses and easy portrait orientation. I couldn't go back to ungripped. 

No, since that's not my problem really. I use mine for work, shooting close range often with poor light and very high contrast. The 7D produces noisy deep shadows. I sometimes take a tripod and shoot bracketed for HDR but I'd prefer not to have to bother. 

Yeah, I can see that being a problem. 

Hopefully others can help - but it sounds like getting a bigger sensor could work. @RaymondLin shoots big sensor canons professionally, he'll know more. 

I edit with Lightroom and photoshop. I sometimes use the Google nik plugins, they're old but they work well and are reasonably intuitive. 

I did try gimp but I didn't get it - I think because I was already using Adobe stuff. Some people love gimp.

I subscribe to Adobe, PS and LR, its currently about £9 a month, going up to £10 or so soon.

I had a go with the video function. This was handheld and shot through a window so not quite (yet, ha ha!) Planet Earth standard. Much to learn and improve on but enjoying it 4K that I transcoded down to 1080p.
