The countryside is deserted compared to 300 years ago
You can drive along roads and see a house every mile or 2
All new house building has houses 12 inches apart with tiny gardens, inadequate parking, and little privacy
There is no reason for any of this, what is being protected? Hedgerows?
Spreading the same number of people more widely, rather than making existing towns and cities more and more densely populated is the answer. Why cram people into a town as if we are living in an area short on space like HK or Monaco?
The house builders are businesses that try to make a profit based on the law. Current planning regs distort what they can do, and fail to compel them to make houses fully fit to live in
Look at the garden cities of the early 20th century
Scatter those who wish to have a bit more space and peace along country lanes, 200m apart
All new house building should include a tax to pay for local infra and service upgrades,
and minimum standards for dwellings per hectare should be improved drastically
Ireland (excluding Dublin) has accidentally done a much better job
