Re the convertible back, does the addition of the extra middle panel work as good as a solid closed back?

Yes mate, the back is fully closed and can convert to a few combinations.

I had it in my head it must be some sort of compromise, like a middle strip to be screwed in and not a solid single - piece back.

I've no idea if either would make any difference, I've never tried it, it just feels to me that a solid back must project better at volume and be part of that sound, cos then it's sealed even at volume, rather than having gaps.
