Great quotes on music from musicians?

What's Hot

Frank Zappa is a goldmine in this regard, but what inspired me to start this thread is actually a quote from Guthrie Govan:

"Honing your technique is as valid a hobby as the next, but I put it to you that there's no point being able to play any faster than you can think."

Thought this might be a nice idea for a thread. So... what have you got?

  • One of my favourites was John Lennon's reply to the question, is Ringo the best drummer in the World?

"He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles"

I like the EVH quote/comment about his style of soloing as falling down the stairs and landing on his feet.

There's a lot to be said for throwing your fingers at the neck and going for it, so long as you can rhythmically/musically resolve where things end up.
    It's not a competition.

It's a good gag and worthy of a Beatle, but Lennon never said it... it's an urban myth.

I like Robert Quine... "I would rather listen to someone who can barely play, who had some soul, who made mistakes, than hearing jazz-rock scales all night long..."

Are you sure that's Ted Nugent?  I'm pretty sure he claims he's never used drugs.

Saw a program about the Sex Pistols once where Johnny Rotten said of Steve Jones 'Nobody can't play the guitar as well as Steve" or words to that effect.Made me chuckle.

I remember a good one from Jon Lord.  Something along the lines of "If you make a mistake, play it again so people think it was deliberate."

  • Not quite a quote about music as such, but I often find myself quoting Freddie Mercury from the live intro to Crazy Little Thing Called Love:

"This shitty guitar never plays the chords I want it to play...."
