Well done mate. Don't go back, it's a disgusting life threatening habit.

  • I remember reading that water helps but it takes time for your lungs to really clean the junk out. I noticed my breathing was a lot better after 2 months.

I had a Bronchoscopy in December.
They insert a fibre optic into your nasal passage, up, round the bend and down into your lungs. They also insert a vaccum tube into your mouth and suck out any plegm or mucus that's in their way.

That works but it's as hellish as it sounds.

Running works. Cough as you run and it will ALL come out.
You need to expand the lungs more than you are used to, to get it all to shift but when it does, if you've smoked for a long time it CAN be like vomiting plegm if a lot moves at once.

    Sexy eh ?

    Good luck and well done.

exercise (with docs approval. usual disclaimers, i'm not a doc).

when you are breathing in & out heavily as you exercise it will stretch your lungs & any unnecessary phlegmy lining will sort of gradually detach. you will be coughing & clearing your throat (annoying aaarrggg aaaaarggg every ten bloody minutes) for the next day (or weeks if you were a hardcore long-term smoker) & then all good. self-cleaning.

& get yourself a cheap cross trainer from ebay & do whatever you doc says is ok two or three times a week on an ongoing basis. that repeated stretching & relaxing that comes with deep hard breathing, not shallow sofa breathing, will prevent too much phlegm getting built up in there. i don't smoke but i still feel clogged up if i don't cross train for a week or two.

you could  join a gym but it's expensive & our local one seems to attract tedious peacocky lycratards who get on my tits. plus it stinks of other peoples' sweat. so home best.

  • Congratulations.

Time is a great healer. See your doctor for further advice for sure, especially regarding exercise - you don't want to push harder than you're capable, but I'm sure they'll be able to advise you.

:) and congratulations on procuring all that new money for the classifieds! ;)

Well done !  It'll take time, exercise will certainly speed things up.

Perhaps some steam inhilation will help (that's what my doc suggests for heavy chest infections).

Just watch your appetite - mine went ballistic when I gave up and I put on 5 stone.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

I've never smoked, but at the gym, alternating steam room with sauna clears my lungs out  when I have a cold

Nasopharyngeal suction clears lungs pretty good.
Stick tube up nose then into airways and proceed to hoover.
    Or...
a few deep breaths, really nice deep breaths -- which is as effective as anything, is recommended by Nobby Stiles (and I'll take that recommendation as gospel), and there was nothing too hippy about that (or Nobby Stiles).
