Silent stage: feedback query

HaychHaych Frets: 5644
A question for all you guys who play on silent stages or run a modelling preamp doobry or other setup straight into front of house:

How do you induce feedback?

I mean sometimes it's needed right?  With a normal amp setup it's not difficult but how is it done given the scenarios above?

When I have to play at a volume where I can't induce feedback then I use a Boss FB-2.

    Boss DF-2.

So these are entirely "in-the-box"? You could use them with headphones?

I did a good search for the DF-2 and FB-2 and one seems to be considered 'vintage' (and hence rare and no longer in production) and the other is discontinued so not easily available.

Are there any similar pedals from other manufacturers that do the same job?

Yes - at least the DF-2 is. The whole sound generation is within the pedal and independent of even the guitar sound itself. It's actually not 'feedback' at all really - it's a much cruder and more interesting solution… essentially it's a monophonic synth oscillator that's triggered by the incoming note. It can be tricky to get the hang of at first, you need to play the note you want cleanly and then immediately press the pedal. After a while it becomes second nature and you can start to do deliberately atonal things with it as well :) - either deliberately triggering it on a glitchy note, or holding the pedal - which will sustain the synth note indefinitely - and playing over the top of it as a drone note, or bending the same note around which sounds like a ring modulator.

The FB-2 works differently, and I haven't got any personal experience with using it beyond trying one briefly and finding it didn't work in the same way.

Having since posted that I've realised they aren't in the shops until late April.

That sounds amazing. Who makes batshit crazy pedals like that any more? Not Boss.

  • I've got a FB2 I bought off the f'bd back in Sept which Im not using.  I paid £60 for it inc the p&p so if you want to give it a go I'd sell it the same price.
