One for all you Skoda-heads...

As there does seem to be a fair number of you!

Pistonheads, if you're not familiar with it, is a very good read.  An offshoot of Autocar (I think, I'll be corrected on that one) it concentrates more on the quick end of the market.

Their "Shed of the Week" feature is my favourite (if you can get around the recent introduction of the sub-Les Dawson prose style), but that's for another day.

I did consider the 280 Superb... just a bit too big.

@Sporky This is what everyone says - how big are they?  Mondeo-big?

I can't think I've seen an estate version, not as I've noticed anyway.

  • Yes they're about the size of a Mondeo, basically huge (as far as UK vehicles go)

Yup - about the size of a Mondeo/Passat on the outside, but somehow even bigger inside.

They should put that drivetrain in the Octavia Scout.

I'm an Octavia fan. Kept mine 3 years and now looking to change/update/upgrade. I saw an old style Superb being cleaned at a local taxi office recently and my discussion with the owner left me very interested. this hasn't quelled my interest either, going back up to more luxury for my aged body has much appeal right now.

    Mmmmmm.

I'm in the market for a car. And ideally I'd like to be able to fit a double bass in it.

    Mmmm indeed.

They're like a limousine inside very capacious cabin and I think the estate is gorgeus, better than the saloon

It's basically the same as the Passat/A4 is'nt it? I was lent one for a couple of days a while back and was very impressed. Big, comfy, well equipped. Well worth looking at if you are looking for that sort of car.

I think the A4 is on a slightly different platform, but the Superb and Passat are related - not as closely as the Golf and Octavia, but pretty similar.

When we bought our current car (Octavia estate), a key criteria was being able to fit a cello in the boot. We ended up taking the cello case (a big white Hiscox beast) to the dealer to check that it fitted ok. I suspect the dealer is still talking about us.

  • The case test is important!

Our old drummer had an F150 Lightning pickup. Nice truck... but then found he couldn't fit his kick drum in the back as he went off the skin measurement, forgetting the lugs and case added enough that he couldn't close it. I did tell him to take it with him but he took a tape measure instead...

There are a few cars I always thought looked better as an estate, the Octavia chief amongst them.  The old Volvo V40 was another.

I do like a bit of barge action, these Superbs look like they might be a good buy at some point down the road.

Exactly..,. just the job. Fantastic car. I saw one in the local showroom a week or two ago and the amount of boot space is quite frankly astonishing.

    40k though!  For a Skoda!
This is from someone that has owned 2 and enjoyed them.

I just think as one of the budget vw gruppe brands, that is ridiculous.

I was trying to post a YouTube link of a Skoda Special Saloon from the 70s, when Skoda's were just weird and even a 5 litre small block in the boot didn't seem that strange....

    ..but couldn't.

Just to say I got 51mpg from my petrol Octavia tonight!! Highest I ever got on my focus was 37mpg.
Given the higher initial and then servicing costs of diesel and slightly higher diesel price and possible tax rise on diesel, I'll wait to see how things pan out with work/ diesel tax / my own finances, before thinking about a diesel. Very impressed with Skoda, though.. lots of very nice and well thought out features (tyre pressure info and ice scraper in petrol cap, very nice skoosher locations, mats that clip in and don't flail around, velcro boot clips for luggage sorting, the boot tray has a slot so no need to fling it on the back seat, and the list goes on).

But if you turn up at a dealer to buy one it'll actually cost you about £33k with some sensible options.
