Gibson Top Hat Knobs:

Basically your traditional non-speed Gibson style knob but with a Volume/Tone gold or silver disk. Witch hats are what I associate with some eras of Jazzmaster.

Ha… yes, just about . They were always called 'reflector bonnets' (ie to distinguish them from plain bonnets) when I was learning all this jargon though. To be fair, the Japanese copy ones are always more of a top-hat shape with a sharper rim.

The one I never understood is 'speed knobs'. Why are they fast?

In my teenage years of looking at the classifieds in the local paper every Thursday and seeing endless Columbus/Avon/Hondo black Les Pauls Custom copies, I used to wonder about that as well. They're definitely easier to grab and make adjustments, but I doubt that translates into speed.
