Another chord from the Live-Band Karaoke night I did on Thursday. Summer Nights from Grease starts in the key of D, then changes to Eb via a Bb chord, but then has another verse of Eb before it goes up again to E, and instead of the B chord you expect for the next key change, there's ear-catching in-key Bb9 chord over the 'Yeah' in the lyrically profound line "Shoo bop bop Yeah!" 2:27 in the video at end of this post.
The first 9th chord that most people know is the James Brown Sex Machine Eb9 x65666, but this other shape is really useful as it gives the 9th degree of the chord maximum prominence at the top of the chord. The full barre chord would be Bb9 686768 but I just play the top four strings, with an optional wrap-around of the thumb onto the 6th string to get the root-note.
Bb9: 6x6768
While I remember, there was another really useful 9th shape in Blame It On The Boogie, so I'll do that one next week.
The chord occurs at 2:27 in this YouTube vid.
