The Wire or The Shield?

Me and Mrs Goldtop have got to the end of our scandi-noir boxsets and fancy returning to some edgy Americana.

Which of The Shield and The Wire would you recommend? Our fave of all time is The Sopranos, if that helps.

Both. They are excellent shows and the last episode of The Shield is one of the great US TV moments.

Both great, in different ways. The Wire along with the Sopranos are responsible for all the great to we have these days IMO. The Shield is more action packed, easier watching perhaps. The question is which to watch first rather than which one. Flick a coin and watch the other as soon as the first is finished.

I enjoyed both but would say The Wire is better written and up there with The Sopranos as the greatest TV to date. The Shield is a good romp though and very enjoyable.

Both. Equally good for different reasons.

The Shield is based on the real life LAPD "Rampart" unit who were more than a bit naughty.

Yes - both the Wire and Shield are ace - I loved The Wire

Breaking Bad was quality too and I confess that I have thoroughly enjoyed Chicago PD

First season of True Detective was good

Closer to home Line of Duty has been good - worth watching from season 1 though as some storylines continue through and recur

Definitely the Wire. Much more grown-up. I don't rate Michael Chiklis that much, but Walton Goggins is very good.

The Shield is excellent. No weak episodes ever, and a roller coaster of a ride. Well written, good depth...

The Wire is even deeper. Excellent format. The end of series scenes with the song track playing long, and each character revisited, are incredible. (Esp end of series 2 - "I Feel Alright" Steve Earle...)

Get past a seemingly weaker series 2, which scene sets for the whole series, and you are away.

Love the Shield too though...

Both are definitely worth watching.

If you will end up watching both - watch "The Shield" first - so You won't have to compare everything else by "The Wire" standards
