  • I've got an ibanez destroyer mk2 old ish one from 83

    I just love the shape!
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Haven't got one but I'll always have a soft spot for them, mainly because of James Hetfield. His white ESP one from the 80s looked so good.

I like them, they hang well on the strap but I'd feel silly playing one.
I'd feel like the 'oldest swinger in town'.

Got a Dean Z 79, pretty much the same as this:

Really comfortable to play despite its appearance, only problem is the case is so long it hardly fits in the car!

    Awesome :)

Same for me, the shape alone instantly attracted me, but after playing one I loved how it felt. Really comfortable to play.

Also a bit of a James Hetfield fan so I went for a white one haha!

Quite like how the shape encourages me to play up the dusty end more as well, especially while sitting with it.

Just googled the Ibanez Destroyer as I couldnt recall the shape, but yep now I remember!
The Chapman guitars 'Ghost fret' is definately on my want list.. in blue.. looks absolutely gorgeous!

  • Love the shape but I'm too fat to look good playing one. And they're not practical enough to outweigh that

I've got a Gibson faded cherry explorer. I love em! They look SO cool, and they're surprisingly comfortable to play!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Black 120th Anniversary, but only because I was too much of a wuss to jump in and buy the Lzzy Hale before someone else did...
Don't ask me, I just play the damned thing...

I have Gibson Melodymaker Explorer ... love it ... cracking little instrument ... slightly smaller than standard body ... and a flying V style headstock. Single pickup ... dead basic, but sublime neck and fretwork, resonant and stupidly huge sustain.
One of my Masterwound Eruption pickups in there ... totally eighties metal.

I like them but the back bit is too big, I would prefer something a bit bigger than the Clapton cut but not fully sized.

Or you could get a Flying V which IMO I'd much cooler.

  • I wanted one more than life itself back in the late 90s when they were like £840 new from dealers.

In the same period I spent £699 on a Yamaha RGX, a similar amount on an Ibanez S-Classic, and £350 on an Ibanez RG, none of which I am proud to have owned.

I have no idea why I didn't just save up for the Explorer. I was not a wise teenager.

I like my guitars to be like my women - shapely with sexy curves, comfortable to hold and comfortable to sit on my lap.  Explorers are just too big, too awkward, too uncomfortable, and too angular for me I'm afraid.  ;)

How could you not love this?

I also really covet an early 80s E2, particularly the CMT:

Someone on here, maybe @HarrySeven posted a photo of their old Jaydee Explorer. It was black with block inlays and 24 frets... and I would prostitute myself for it, or for something similar.

  • My first really good guitar was a Gothic Explorer from the first ring Gibson did. Amazing thing, despite silly ceramic pickups.

I really fancy a natural finish one. I almost bought one last month but the neck wasn't quite comfy

I owned one for almost half a day back in 1994 after really wanting one for years. It was an Explorer 2 (a bit like this one)

I got it for a very good price, took it home, played it for a little bit and stood in front of the mirror with it strapped on and decided that I just didn't suit it. So I took it back to the shop and exchanged it for the gorgeous red Japanese Epi Casino, which was much more me.

I think the Explorer was just a bit too, well... RAWK!  for me. That Casino on the other hand... sigh!
