NPD: 1590a Shimmer and reverb anyone?

I love a good shimmer pedal, but the choice of 1590a pedals with this feature is pretty dismal. In fact, the only one I know of is the Mooer Shimverb, which adds the shimmer effect in 5ths rather than octaves, making it sound pretty weird IMHO.

I know there are good pedals out there - the Zoom CDR does a decent shimmer but can be hard to tweak on the fly, the Bluesky is great but takes up a lot of space on the board - I just want a pedal that doesn't take a lot of space as I only use the effect occasionally, can be tweaked on the fly and looks pretty cool.

What's a guy to do? Make one of course...

So here's the yet-to-be named 1590a pedal - although I'm toying with Octoverb ... more on this later.

I've fabricated my own PCB and managed to keep using through-hole components, I'm not a massive fan of surface mount! (The actual digital chip is surface mount though, on the copper side of the PCB.)

It's a digital reverb with shimmer. Controls for mix - this is an analogue mix section so your base tone isn't digitised at all. Tone control - can remove some of the harsh higher end if you're wanting a less in-your-face or darker shimmer. Shimmer - which adds the amount of signal that the shimmer is applied to and Reverb which controls the length of the reverb.

I've also added a 3-position switch to make the pedal more versatile - you can switch to a standard room and hall reverb if needed.

You'll also see on the back a triple DIP switch. The EEPROM I've used can hold 8 programs, so setting the front switch to the middle position and changing these back switches gives you another 5 'secret' reverbs - 3 standard, one with chorus and one with delay - like an EQD dispatch master.

I've also socketed the EEPROM so I can remove, flash a few different programs and turn the pedal into a different effect entirely. Although then the labelling doesn't make sense.

Anyway, I'm really pleased with how this all came together - here are some pics...

    Wow. Just WOW.
Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman.
My boss told me "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"... now I'm sat in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

  • that's awesome! Did you use the SPIN chip?

  • That looks great, really good. Any sound clips?

  • Very nice. If it sounds good I'd go for that!

Yep - SPIN FV-1 still only scratched the surface of programming it ... :)

Don't have any clips of the pedal yet - here are some of the prototype for this one though - same circuit, algorithm has been tweaked slightly, but it gives you a good idea ...

  • Amazing sounding!  Great work man.

  • Yes, that looks awesome. If you could make one with trails and with remote control (ie so I can engage/bypass it from an external relay controller), I'd be in there.

Like that a lot. I'd definitely go for one of them.

Already has tails as it's buffered bypass :)

Not familiar with the remote control option - is it a particular socket?

I love that Dan! Any plans for producing and selling them yet?

@merlin Yeah maybe - I'm just investing in an exposure unit and etch tank to up my PCB fabrication game. At the moment it's the PCB etching that takes time, but I'm not quite at the level to get them professionally fabricated yet.

Nah, just a jack socket to replace the function of the switch. I've got a MIDI relay switcher, which lets me open/close relays with MIDI patches; I'd love to be able to add reverb, but I haven't found one small enough to fit on my board which is also relay-controllable.

Not a fan of tapdancing, in case you hadn't noticed ;)

If you do decide to sell them, @4114Effects put me on the list.
