John Birch would apply those blobby Fender decals to anything he felt like back in the day - over the years, I've seen cheapo late '60's/early '70's Jap Strats, Jap Teles (I've got one of those) and all sorts...as @WezV says above, it seems a case of "anything goes". I would be very surprised if it was substantively original.
