Honda to supply Sauber - McLaren to drop Honda?
Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!
Regarding a Mclaren-Honda divorce, well that's going to be very messy. The rumour about a performance clause was started by Alonso, all other parties have denied it. What is cast iron is that Honda pay Mclaren $60m annually, provide free engines which means Mclaren don't have to pay anyone else $30m for lumps and they pay the drivers salaries- $40m. Even if Alonso walks, Button next year will cost $12m so best case scenario Mclaren would be $102m worse off next year.
The other hurdle is that the other three engine suppliers do not have to supply Mclaren if they don't want to, the engine supplier that does is the one with the fewest teams, in this instance it would be Honda, except the lumps will cost $30m.
All manufacturers had hoped to recoup R&D costs via leasing their engines to customers, less the cost of supplying their own factory teams, Mclaren have prevented Honda from doing this for two seasons and if they force Honda out of the sport they will not be able to recover this cost at all for the remaining three seasons. Honda would have a legitimate claim to take Mclaren to court to recoup these monies, if Mclaren lose they would be bankrupt.
I thought McLaren were off the hook for Button in 2018 - isn't there a break clause?
