Scorpions - they actually did announce retirement plans a few years ago but scrapped them. To be fair they are still on top form live but the last studio album was horrible.
Whitesnake - Coverdale's voice is completely shot and the last few albums have been dreadful.
All the '80s hair metal bands like Ratt, Warrant and Quiet Riot currently doing those "Rock'n'Roll" cruise ship tours. None of them have released an album for years and they have rotating lineups where people like Keri Kelli, Jimmy de Grasso and Jizzy Pearl have played in every band at some point.
Also agreed about Status Quo, surely they should just pack it in as a mark of respect to Parfitt. Rainbow I regard as long gone, these last couple of little tours are just money-making excercises, presumably, and nothing to do with the original band.
I could go on (Def Leppard, Metallica, Deep Purple, Aerosmith...) but I have to say that although it's fun having this little rant I feel slightly uncomfortable about it, it's entirely up to these old buggers whether they want to carry on or not.

Come on Dave, you're sat in the Tenth Second of Forever and Waiting For Tomorrow.
And there seems to be uncertainty about the future of Rush - not that I want them to retire, they've never released a real dud album despite being around forever.
And that's part of why I started this thread - it's okay to bow out if the mojo's gone. There's no need to keep on keeping on. Jazz and Blues guys have a longer lifespan, because it's OK to sit on a stool play the old stuff. Some rock guys have gone this way (eg, Clapton) and that's great. But the average lifespan of an act in the music industry is 3 albums. Not a lot right! But don't try and act 20 if you're 60 and if the ideas have run dry then call it day. This is not an ageist 'issue' for me, but a credibility issue.
But the Rainbow with a tribute singer (good as he is) and the rest of Blackmores Night doesn't do it for me.
