if:
*you have the £300+ worth of tools needed to cut a channel into a non-flat top guitar.
* you are very handy with a sharp chisel to do all the bits those tools can’t reach
*you are willing to refret the guitar to add neck binding
....
have you considered faux binding. Either scrape back to the maple ala PRS or paint it on. Still takes a lot of skill, but may be an easier approach

just found this thread... may give this a go!...

This sort of rig:

the normal way is to either hand cut with a purfling cutter and chisels or use a router and jig. There is a dremel attachment too, but frankly it’s a piece of crap.
the thread you linked to really is your best option

He posted the project on Gretsch Pages (I think) but I can't find the thread.
You mark out the binding with the tool which is like a small sharp scalpel blade then use a sharp chisel to cut the channel out, it works surprisingly well and quite clean

May have a word with the guy who shaved my neck down the other day, he should be able to clock the outline and run a program... if he thinks he can I'd trust him to do that.
That said, its all just an idea at the moment anyway... Will probably leave it well alone
It's the goldtop in the pic

purfling cutter and chisel
router binding jig
or a dremel attachment

cheers for the thoughts all!... I think I will leave as it is!...

Stew-mac make one similar, and I think there are other copies out there

I have the stew-mac one but have always found it a struggle to get consistent results. I wouldn't feel confident to do a full guitar with it

Flat top guitars are easy. this is all you need.

When I do a bound les paul I use these to do most of the channel before the carve. Takes seconds. I then use the dremel to do the bit in the cutaway, it takes a lot longer to do this little bit!
Doing a pre-carved les paul is a lot different
The big jig is on my shopping list

As you see in the thread, I did use the Stewmac dremel attachment and 'got away with it'. But @WezV 's description of it is pretty accurate You'll see I had to use chisels at the two body join regions - again, at the limit of my abilities.
In the end, I was pleased with the result BUT - if I had to rate the % use of my accumulated skills after 6 years of modding and building guitars and basses, I would put it at 80%+ It's not a job for the faint-hearted or inexperienced!

I got the Stew Mac one, its not mine but it does live in my workshop, has done for about 10 years, most likely never been used for about 10 years. It was originally purchased and given to me to use to make drop tops with banding's. It failed miserably at that, I can see how it could be modified to do drop tops, but as it's not mine I'd better not. I should say there's nothing wrong with it doing normal banding's, of the things that shown in the Stew Mac video. It just that I do all mine on an overhead router which is quick and easy. Although I've got two custom Les Paul's on the bench at the moment that are going to have the multicoloured banding, as these banding;s are only available about 6mm high. I may well dig out the Stew Mac routed jig to do them with.

He even made the full neck jig that stewmac sells
These are all based on the stewmac stuff too
I'll be doing a build thread at some point so you'll see the jig I'm using for it
