Changing the magnet from Alnico 5 to Alnico 2 might help.
Ideally looking for something that will keep it's treble and a tight bottom end. Any recommendation @Funkfingers
Install that pickup in the neck/Rhythm position and, in order to balance the output levels, you need an even hotter bridge/Treble position pickup. The other alternative is to adjust the JB a very long distance away from the strings.
No law says that you your mate cannot do that. I certainly would not wish to lose Jack_ a sale. There is much to be said for making the JB the bridge position pickup and moving the current bridge pickup to the neck position.
Testing the 498 in the neck position of your mate's guitar will provide a reasonable approximation of how any hot A5 humbucker is likely to sound in that position.
As you know, Gibson usually pairs the 498 with a slightly overwound P.A.F.-style humbucker or, occasionally, with a P90.
