I vote yes keep the scratchplate.
(I admit that with a guitar conceived in the 00's this is ridiculous.)

Something garish and tacky would add to the Gretsch vibe.
In my opinion, the fastening screw positions on those aftermarket budget 'guards look seriously naff - especially the one nearest the neck heel.
But if you do, I’d go black to match fret markers. I’d also have black nut too.
