To me a relic has to have a plausible story as to how the relicing might have happened. Fender used to shoot custom colours over sunburst bodies ... either because the sunburst was flawed, or there was a particular demand for a custom colour. And yes, the custom colour does wear off to reveal a sunburst. However not like that! Just in high wear areas like where the arm comes over the body.
The pictured guitar is truly abysmal.
I agree on all points.... but it does tell a story, just not the one about natural playing wear on a factory finish. ;)

I bet a few old Fenders did end up with the Dulux treatment. I have certainly seen it happen to other guitars, then they look like this when someone tries to clean it off and gives up halfway through

As someone who hates the whole relic concept, I actually thing it looks no better or worse, than most professional relics.

That tells us everything we need to know about your powers of discernment.

Here's a plausible story - some daft cunt tried to relic it.

Professionally prepared to look exactly as if the instrument was relic'd by someone with no eye for aesthetics and no concept of wear and tear over time.

It really is the hardest look to capture.  You have to try hard to avoid all those examples of genuine wear ;)

Screw all this relic talk, I’m genuinely distressed by the strat control knobs and selector switch tip. Now that’s unnatural!

Edit: Volume and tone the wrong way around too. Sacrilege!

Someone needs to buy him some plastic tubs and vinegar so he can professionally relic the bridge too.

    Yuck

Looks like the kind of distressed furniture the missus keeps suggesting is really trendy

At first glance I did think sunburst finish worn down to a blue primer/basecoat but then you look for more than half a second and it's just another nutter let loose with a paintbrush and some leftover paint
