Not cheap but a fairly serious tool and often goes on sale too, if you're not in a hurry just make sure you're signed up to Steinberg's mailing lists...
Think of GB for IOS as Logic Lite with adaptations to suit the touchscreen interface. Apple's intention is that GB should hook you then, funds permitting, you graduate to the full-on professional DAW.
KORG Gadget for IOS.
Something else I use on iOS that is great for mic-based recording is Multitrack DAW. Very efficient user of the hardware. The UI is optimised for iDevices (esp. phones) and it is really easy to use to get decent WAV recordings of live instruments. Exporting to Logic is straightforward. If you don't want to use a software instrument or a software drummer, it's excellent. I use it on my phone a lot. Worth having a look at the website to see what you get for your small amount of money.

To OP: GarageBand is way more powerful than it first appears. There’s a lot in there, but it’s really well hidden. Stick with it. I use it for everything, and rarely find it wanting.
